Graft axe might edge many more leaders after Wako US ban

The United States government issued a travel ban on Monday targeting the former attorney general Amos Wako, his wife Florence Ngaira and Son Julius. According to US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo, the three are also banned from doing business in US.

The designation as relayed by Secretary Pompeo invoked Section 7031(c) of the Department of State on foreign operations Act, 2019 (Div. F,P.L.116-6), as executed by the continuing appropriation Act, 2020 (Div. A, P.L. 116-59).

The provision of Section 70319(c) states that where the Secretary of State has substantial evidence that officials of foreign states have been involved in major corruption, those individuals and their families are ineligible to travel into the United States.

A signal to Kenya’s anti-graft agencies

The US government has put Kenya on the radar for a long time and more government officials might be barred from travelling to the US over corruption related issues.
