Deputy President William Ruto had to cancel a meeting with his lieutenants at the eleventh hour, after Kibra results went sour. Sources privy to Ruto’s inner circle indicates that the deputy president had organized a meeting with his cronies just after the mini polls to chart a way forward, but seemed to have been angered by the results in which their candidate lost by a huge margin.
The race was largely hyped as a precursor to 2022 succession politics pitting DP Ruto against ODM leader Raila Odinga. Jubilee had heavily invested in the elections and Ruto was confident of either a win or a slim defeat. Ruto’s disappointment was conspicuously expressed at the cancellation of his scheduled Karen meeting.
Ruto’s close ally confided that the Deputy President was enraged by the dismal performance of Mariga, after spending so much time and resources to wrest the seat from ODM. A post-mortem analysis was to be done in a retreat at the DP’s Karen home, immediately after poll supervision.
The DP is believed to have been disappointed by some of the Jubilee members who campaigned for their opponent and Jubilee’s secretary general Raphael Tuju who failed to turn up in Jubilee campaigns.
