President Uhuru Kenyatta has vowed to end female genital mutilation by 2022. Addressing women representatives from across the regions that traditionally practiced FGM, in state house on Friday, the head of state reiterated the commitment of his government to end such a retrogressive practice. President Uhuru stated that the founding fathers of this nation encouraged FGM, as a break from their former colonial masters who had interfered with the culture of most communities in Kenya.
According to word health organization report, close to 200 million women around the globe are subjected to FGM. FGM is mostly practiced in Africa, Kenya not an exception. Kenya is among the few countries in Africa that has illegalized FGM, but the act is still secretly conducted in most parts of Kenya.
Various leaders and human rights organization are championing the fight against FGM, and encouraging communities to embrace change by desisting to spoil the future of young girls. The government, through bead making, is engaging women from communities that practice FGM and eliciting them of the need to educate their girls.
